Stand Up Term 4

‘Stand Up’ is fast approaching and the excitement is building. Now running for the seventh time, Stand Up is a 6-week social justice course for participants approaching their bar/bat mitzvah that explores community, social responsibility and global awareness.

Once-a-week participants have the opportunity to embark on treasure hunts, learn about Fair Trade and coffee farmers from Brazil, debate the merits of various global causes, brainstorm solutions to global poverty, build their ‘model society’, explore concepts of multiculturalism, community, Jewish identity and much more.

Our responsibility to humanity for the alleviation of “modern plagues” is an essential aspect of Jewish adulthood and membership. The milestone of bar/bat mitzvah is an ideal opportunity to assess what being a globally-aware Jewish adult means and countless participants are discovering just that; not only their place within a broader society and humanity, but the empowerment to bring about change where change is needed. Participants are learning that it’s never too soon to begin changing the world and above all – that anyone can do it!
